What is TurningPoint?

TurningPoint is an audience response system app. It enables you to take  part in interactive class polls by voting on your own smartphone or web  enabled device. The aims to promote better communication and more interaction in face-to-face classes.

How it works at a glance

  • You first need to activate a licensed Turning Technologies account, details of which will be sent to your NUI Galway email address. Look for an email from TurningTechnologies.eu.
  • After this, you can download the TurningPoint app. This is available on Apple iOS (for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad devices), and also Android and BlackBerry.
  • If you don't have a smartphone, you can still participate in class polls from any web-enabled device that has a web browser, such as a laptop or tablet PC using the link https://responseware.eu (be sure to sign in to be able to participate).

Introduction

So how does Turning Point work? Here' a a typical setup.

In  the classroom, the instructor presents a question to the students  either verbally, or in the written form using a PowerPoint presentation  or the TurningPoint software directly. The question can be either in  multiple-choice, true/false, yes/no, or numeric format.

The instructor can give the students some time to discuss the question among themselves. After discussing possible solutions, the students then submit their answers to the question by using the TurningPoint app. Each student is logged in on their own account on the app, and also enters a  Session ID which belongs only to one specific class. Their smartphone  or web browser transmits data using the wi-fi to the Session ID set-up  by the instructor. All responses are then displayed on the screen.

The benefit to you

One  of the reasons why this technology is becoming increasingly popular in education is the ability of students to be actively engaged in the classroom. TurningPoint facilitates student collaboration and dialogue,  especially in large classrooms where it can be hard to encourage active participation. As you are using your smartphones to answer questions, you are provided with an opportunity to get instant feedback, even in a large class.

Note:  You will need to set up your TurningPoint account fully before you download the app and attempt to sign in (see Step 1 below).

Step 1: Activate your TurningPoint account

Licence your account

You will receive an email to your NUI Galway email address, with a link to create a Turning Technologies account.

Start by going to http://studentmail.nuigalway.ie and sign in using your NUI Galway email address and Campus Account password to access your email.

After  clicking on the link in your email, and logging in to TurningPoint, you  will see that your account has a license and the expiry date.

No additional subscription code is needed.

Click to continue.

At NUI Galway, we don't distribute physical clickers, so you don't need to enter any information here. Just click to continue.Clicker

If you have correctly activated your account, you will now have two  green checks on your profile- one for your TurningPoint license and one  for your Blackboard connection.

You can check your account at any stage by going to https://account.turningtechnologies.eu/account/

You will need to be connected to the internet in lectures to use the  system. TurningPoint will work with any type of network connectivity.  However, you are advised to connect to the NUI Galway Eduroam wi-fi  network in order to avoid using your 3G allowance or incurring charges.
