Module Feedback Evaluation Surveys in Canvas

This article will discuss the tools available to all staff that can be used to create an end-of-term module evaluation or student feedback form.

What tools are available?

  1. Canvas Classic Quizzes
  2. Microsoft Forms
  3. Vevox

If you used the standard Blackboard survey in your 22-23 modules, you should find a version of this already created in your 22-23 modules converted to a Canvas Classic Quiz. These can be edited and copied into current modules.

Canvas Classic Quiz
  • A Canvas-native tool
  • May already be a version available for you in 22-23 to copy over
  • Variety of question types
  • Can be used with a question bank
  • Can be converted to a New Quiz if a survey feature is developed by Canvas
  • Share these to other modules or colleagues by using 'copy to' or 'send to'.
  • It is not FULLY anonymous, as anyone enrolled as a 'teacher' can tick and untick the 'anonymous response' box at will, even after students have submitted
  • The data is downloadable to Excel
  • Limited data visualisation will be automatically generated
  • You must adjust settings so that it is an 'ungraded survey' and tick on the 'anonymous responses'.
Microsoft Forms
  • Accessed at https://forms.office.com
  • The standard university questionnaire is available here for you to duplicate (and edit if you wish).
  • Likert scale question type available
  • Add these to Canvas in variety of ways (1) link in an announcement (2) add link to module (3) embed in a page or assignment
  • Likert-scale questions will require students to scroll horizontally to access the full range
  • The data is downloadable to Excel (or open to Excel 365)
  • Good quality data visualisation will be automatically generated
  • Duplicate the Form and rename it for each module
Vevox
  • Accessed at https://universityofgalway.vevox.com/
  • Use 'survey' feature (rather than live 'poll' feature)
  • Mobile-friendly
  • Use 'external tools' to add to Canvas
  • Can be shared by duplicating and adding your colleague's name to the session via 'collaboration'
  • Can be shared by exporting to a file and sending that file to a colleague
  • Basic question types - no Likert question
  • Best used for shorter surveys, as there is no way to group or categorise questions
  • Good data visualisation available
  • The data is downloadable to Excel
  • Duplicate the survey and rename it for each module
