Resubmitting and Extensions Past Due Date - for Turnitin Assignments

This article will identify several methods of creating one Turnitin assignment that allows submissions from students with an extension (or a re-submission after the due date has passed).

Turnitin Due Dates

When using the full Turnitin integration, accessed by the three stacked dots at the top right of + Assignments (pictured below), it is only possible to set one due date. Although Canvas appears to allow you to set multiple due dates for different sections or different students, doing so will result in the due date changing for the entire class.

Creating two assignments with different due dates can make the gradebook unnecessarily untidy and cause problems when weighting marks.

Changing the due date, even if only for a few students, will change the due date on the submission portal for all students and (depending on a student's notification settings) will alert students by email about the changed due date.

To avoid this, choose from the methods below to create 1 assignment but accept submissions past the due date.

Allow late submissions

One option is to tick the 'allow late submissions' box in the 'optional settings' of a Turnitin assignment. This will allow all students to submit past the due date. The date and time will be recorded and noted in red on the submission list.

The benefit of this is that no additional settings are required of you.

The negative of this is that you must take care to note which students had permission to submit 'late' (e.g. students with a LENS report or other extension) and which students submitted late without permission.

A workaround for this would be to incorporate the use of the 'until' date. When creating the assignment for the class as a whole, add the due date to the 'until' option in assignment settings.

  1. Click '+ Add' to create another 'Assign' box.
  2. 'Assign to' will open - type in the students' names who have extra time.
  3. Set the exact same due date as the previous 'assign' box.
  4. However, do not set an 'until' date.

The 'until' date restricts students from accessing the assignment - they will be unable to submit. By setting the assignment this way, you are allowing only the students with an extension to submit 'late' to the assignment, blocking all other students from doing so.

When you are ready for students to see their feedback (on the feedback release date), you must manually click 'edit assignment' and remove the 'until' date set for all students, as this is restricting their access to the assignment. Once you have removed the 'until' date, students will be able to click in and see their feedback after the feedback release date passes.

Submit on behalf of the student(s)

Another option, particularly if you have only one student who needs to submit after the deadline, is to submit on the student's behalf.

If the student e-mails you the submission, you can take the following steps:

  1. Download the submission
  2. Navigate to the assignment
  3. Find the student's name
  4. Follow the student's row to the far right
  5. Click the three horizontal dots
  6. Choose 'upload'
  7. Upload the file you have just downloaded.
  8. Follow the prompts until you have submitted the assignment.

Please note that when you or a student resubmits, it erases the original submission entirely. It cannot be retrieved by the Turnitin administrator or Turnitin support.

When a student is given permission to resubmit after the due date has passed

If a student has submitted and an instructor wishes to allow the student to resubmit after the due date, there are two options:

  1. Resubmit on behalf of the student (see above section)
  2. Delete the current submission and ask the student to upload the new submission themselves.

Do NOT request a permanent deletion from the Turnitin repository - the re-submission will permanently delete the original by default. This will not remove the submission, and the student will not be able to resubmit.

Instead, click the three horizontal dots on the student's row and choose 'Remove from inbox'.
